Mobile mechanic vs. hauling to the yard — when is each actually worth it?

Every repair I get two instincts: call the mobile guy who comes to the slip, or bite the bullet and haul to the yard. Mobile is convenient but big jobs feel like they go sideways dockside. Where's the honest line between 'mobile is fine' and 'just haul it'?

Rule of thumb: anything below the waterline, anything needing the engine out, or anything over a day = yard. Impellers, electronics, oil, fuel system, dockside electrical = mobile all day. The yard's lift and clean floor are the whole point for the big stuff.

Mobile mechanic's own take: I'll tell you when to haul. If a guy is happy to do a transmission swap rafted up in a 2-knot current, that's who you DON'T want. The honest mobile guys turn down the jobs that belong in a yard.
