Boating in California: SoCal, the Bay, and the Delta
Of the roughly 390 boats and yachts for sale by owner in California on YachtBazar today, the
median asking price is $42,000. Sailboats are the second-largest type behind
general powerboats by title keyword — roughly 55 of the live listings, ahead of cruisers/motor
yachts and fishing boats. That's a different mix than Florida's fishing-boat-heavy
inventory, and it tracks the water: California's boating is split between two very different
coasts and one inland delta, and the wind-driven sailing culture around San Francisco Bay is
part of why sailboats rank where they do statewide.
Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Orange County, Marina del Rey) is
where most of the state's boating population sits — big harbors, sportfishing fleets running out
of San Diego, and offshore racing traditions like the Newport-to-Ensenada race. Northern
California's boating centers on San Francisco Bay (Sausalito, Alameda, Berkeley), where
consistent afternoon wind built a serious sailing and racing scene — the Bay hosted the
America's Cup match in 2013. Inland, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is a different kind of
boating entirely: a maze of sloughs and channels behind the coast, more houseboats, ski boats
and bass fishing than saltwater cruisers. The Channel Islands off Ventura and Santa Barbara are
the state's other distinct boating ground, a crossing rather than a coastal run.
San Diego, Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, the SF Bay Area and Stockton carry the most listings
