Boating in Louisiana: Sportsman's Paradise, From Pontchartrain to the Gulf
Of the roughly 225 boats and yachts for sale by owner in Louisiana on YachtBazar today, the
median asking price is $46,500. Fishing boats are the second-largest type
behind general powerboats — 19 of the by-owner listings we classified by title keyword, with
another five center consoles counted as their own category — ahead of sailboats (11) and
cruisers & motor yachts (7). That mix fits a
state that has put "Sportsman's Paradise" on its license plates for generations: the marsh
between the Mississippi delta and the Texas line is inshore redfish and speckled-trout water,
and ports like Venice and Grand Isle put the offshore Gulf within reach of a day's run.
The listings cluster around greater New Orleans, and the top five cities tell you exactly
where. Marrero and Metairie are Jefferson Parish — the west bank of the Mississippi and the
south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, respectively — while Madisonville and Mandeville sit directly
across the lake on the north shore, where the Tchefuncte River meets Pontchartrain. The lake
itself is broad, brackish and protected — closer to bay boating than open Gulf — which is why so
much of the state's family powerboat inventory lives within an hour of New Orleans. South and
west of the city the water changes character: the Barataria and Terrebonne marshes below Houma,
the Atchafalaya Basin, and the Calcasieu estuary at Lake Charles are shallow-draft country where
bay boats, skiffs and aluminum hulls earn their keep, with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway
threading the whole coast together.
Marrero, New Orleans, Metairie, Madisonville and Mandeville carry the most listings
